Dr. Zimmerman is interested in mechanisms of gene regulation – including the role of cis-regulatory elements in modulating chromatin architecture and nuclear localization of genes throughout development. Recent student lead research projects have taken advantage of synthetic biology systems to study the effects of cis-element copy number and location on reporter gene expression, investigated the expression of clinically relevant transgenes in probiotics using drug-free selection systems, and are currently assessing the ability of a CRISPR-Cas9 based adenine base editor to modify disease associated SNPs.
