Forbes magazine furthers College of the Ozarks fruitcake tradition

POINT LOOKOUT, MO. — Forbes magazine recently released an article, “Here’s How a Fruitcake Became the Recipe for a College Trademark,” highlighting the College of the Ozarks’ signature creation.

In Forbes’ article, the full story of the College’s tradition is told. The infamous fruitcake recipe dates to 1933, when home economics teacher Annabelle McMaster introduced it to her students. Dr. Robert M. Good, the College’s president at the time, decided to gift the students’ work to donors and promised to buy the department their first electric stove with the resulting donations.

Eighty-five years later, students working in the Fruitcake and Jelly Kitchen bake approximately 15,000 fruitcakes each year to be sent out to donors and customers across the U.S. and abroad. The student industry also produces close to 100,000 apple butter and various fruit spreads throughout the year.
