Fikadu Zewditu

Fikadu’s journey to the College of the Ozarks is unique. Growing up in Ethiopia, his path to C of O stands as a testament to God’s guidance and the opening of doors of opportunity in his life. Driven by both financial necessity and a deep commitment to his faith, he sought a college where he could earn his degree without debt, all while remaining in a Christ-centered environment.

“I am here because I could not afford to go to college in the U.S. Colleges are very expensive here. It is hard to find a Christian college with Christian values nowadays… I found that abundantly at C of O.”

Through the college’s work program, Fikadu has gained valuable skills at The Keeter Center, that will prepare him for the future and give him experiences that set him apart from others.

Plant seeds of success.

“The work program is amazing, more than I expected…. Time to time the work program has helped me be the best version of myself every day. Especially related to developing my communication skills and dressing very professionally. In my opinion, learning through hands-on work is the best thing.”

Fikadu’s childhood was filled with hardship. Born into a farming family in Ethiopia, he never met his father, who was tragically killed before birth by his uncle. Due to violent cultural traditions, he and his mother were forced to flee for their safety. After her passing when he was five years old, Fikadu endured years of mistreatment, as well as homelessness, before finding refuge in an organization that helped orphans.

“Mimi, my mentor, prayed with me, read the Bible with me, and helped me find peace through faith. With help from Mimi and by the grace of God, I forgave my uncle who killed my father. I want to meet him in person, and I want to tell him I forgave him.

At C of O, Fikadu has found encouragement and a strong support system through his fellow classmates, the faculty and staff, work supervisors, and many others.

“The help from faculty here is amazing…. I always love to get emails from Dean Knight. His phrase, ‘You are a pleasure to be around, and you are loved and matter,’ means so much to me. The faculty and staff here truly care about students, and that has made all the difference in my journey.”

His missionary family, the Bridges, played a vital role in his faith and in shaping the man he is today. His faith continues to guide him through life, his relationships, and propel him into his future.  Fikadu continues to fall more in love with Jesus and embraces both the joys and challenges of life.

“The Bridges are my blessing from the Lord. I don’t know how to express the love and respect I have for them. I am so grateful for the love and sacrifice they paid towards who I am today”

Looking ahead, Fikadu envisions a future filled with purpose. He admires the values of America – pillars like patriotism, faith and unity – and hopes to someday bring those to Ethiopia.

With a major in family studies and social work, Fikadu plans to work with children, making a difference in their lives before he steps into politics.

“I hope to work with kids for a while before joining politics. I just love kids. I do not remember much of my childhood, so every time I see kids, I see my childhood in them.”

As Fikadu continues his journey at College of the Ozarks, he remains focused on his faith, his education, and his mission to serve others.
