Switchboard

Position Title:

Switchboard Operator

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 5

Job Description:

The Switchboard operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is the communication center of the campus.  The Switchboard receives all off-campus incoming calls, as well as calls from students, faculty, staff and administrators on campus.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Answer all incoming calls from on and off campus and route them to the appropriate location,
Maintain radio contact with the campus security, fire department and various administrative officials,
Monitor the campus alarm system and notify the proper authorities when the alarms are activated,
Handle incoming and outgoing fax correspondence.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

Sweep, dust mop and general cleaning of the Switchboard work space,
Assist, on occasion, with the Student Work Office activities.

Basic Qualifications:

Phone skills: ability to communicate effectively, clear voice, good diction, customer service attitude,
Dependability, promptness and faithful adherence to the work schedule,
Remain calm under pressure, especially when emergencies occur,
Ability to multi-task and pay attention to detail,
Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Desirable Qualifications:

Pleasant personality,
Ability to work well with others,
Patience with frustrated callers.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Learn all aspects, policies and procedures of running the Switchboard,
Develop proficient radio communication skills, to enable the student to interact with security, fire department, administration, etc., in a fashion appropriate for the College,
Develop proficient and appropriate telephone etiquette,
Develop a customer service mentality - go over and above what is expected to serve the people on and off campus,
Learn how to interact respectfully with fellow workers and promote a positive atmosphere in the work place,
Adherence to schedule/promptness/calling when personal schedule changes that would interfere with work schedule,
Develop the skills necessary to write detailed and accurate reports,
Continually strive to improve both personally and professionally,
Handle emergency situations without panicking,
Develop the ability to work independently, as well as with a team,
Realize how important it is to keep certain matters confidential.
