The Power Plant operates twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and is the main distribution center for steam and electricity for the campus.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
Monitor operation of the power plant facilities,
Take readings on meters, boiler and associated equipment, pumps, also to include chemical tests, etc.
Secondary duties and responsibilities:
Sweep, mop, and general cleaning of the Power Plant work space,
Assist, on occasion, with the maintenance of boilers and equipment.
Basic mechanical skills,
Dependability, promptness and faithful adherence to the work schedule,
Ability to remain calm under pressure, especially during emergencies,
Ability to be multi-tasked and pay attention to detail,
Familiar with hand tools and power equipment.
Ability to work with others.
The student will:
Learn to effectively maintain and service boilers,
Operate power and hand tools,
Maintain and repair steam lines,
Conduct daily cleaning responsibilities,
Learn to handle stressful situations,
Gain understanding of boilers in order to allow the correction of malfunctions,
Remain calm during hectic situations (boiler alarms),
Utilize good decision-making skills,
Demonstrate sound character,
Make informed decisions that are based upon prior training,
Weigh the options and choose the best option,
Show respect for supervisors, peers, and patrons,
Show up to work in the proper uniform,
Show up for all work shifts on time and staying until the next shift operators arrive,
Complete logs accurately on the hour,
Utilize initiative in conducting tasks without supervisor direction (doing the checks, cleaning, and maintenance),
Learn effective communication skills,
Relay plant conditions accurately to the next shift,
Inform supervisors of work absences in advance,
Relay boiler malfunctions to supervisors during night shifts,
Develop a good work ethic,
Be present while on the clock,
Demonstrate enthusiasm about work,
Learn time management skills on and off the clock,
Plan extra-curricular activities around class and work.
