Pool

Position Title:

Lifeguard

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 3

Job Description:

Student workers assist with the operation of the College swimming pool in its everyday activities.  These programs provide lap and recreational swims and wellness opportunities for campus students, faculty and staff.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Assist in the supervision and operation of the swimming pool,
Serve as a lifeguard for all College-related swimming events,
Assist with the College’s beginning swimming classes,
Assist with the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program,
Maintain up-to-date certifications in all areas of lifeguarding.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

Clean the pool deck, equipment and the pool locker rooms,
Vacuum the pool,
Work the admission gate for home volleyball and basketball contests,
Become certified at the instructor level in lifeguarding or water safety.

Basic Qualifications:

Must be physically capable of performing duties as a lifeguard,
Must be able to pass the prerequisite swimming, first aid, CPR/PR and AED skills and written tests,
Must display ability to handle situations in extraordinary circumstances,
Must possess an attitude of cooperation with supervisor, fellow workers and patrons,
Must be able to work nights and weekends.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience as a lifeguard at a city or municipal pool,
Instructor level certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding or Water Safety,
Ability to work with other student workers in a team setting.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Learn the policies and procedures for proper operation of the pool,
Learn proper procedures for maintenance in and around the pool setting,
Demonstrate the ability to interact with co-workers and promote a positive atmosphere in the work place,
Demonstrate the ability to do work independently as well as with a team,
Demonstrate necessary communication skills and teaching ability with small groups,
Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills for situations when work supervisor is not present,
Develop skills and improve training that will enhance the position of lifeguard and swimming instructor.
