Hospital (McDonald Clinic)

Position Title:

Health Clinic Student Worker

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 4

Job Description:

The campus health clinic helps to serve the basic health and medical needs for the College’s students. The clinic sees approximately four to five thousand students, faculty, and staff in one year’s time.  Students are seen for sickness, work related accidents, immunization updates, and physical examinations. Faculty and Staff are seen for workman’s comp accidents, or BP checks.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Answer phones, take messages, answer simple questions to patients about clinic activities and rules,
Keep charts up to date, make new charts on incoming students, file charts, fill out forms for students charts,
Enter data into the computer,
Check out equipment on loan, charge out OTC drugs,
Transport patients to various doctors offices and appointments,
Take vital signs on new patients each day,
Run errands all over campus to other departments,
Assist the nurses or PA with hands-on care,
Assist with first aid, and patient-care activities.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

Cleaning duties of the clinic: vacuum, dust, sterilize equipment, make beds, fill the van with gas, restock medical supplies, etc.

Basic Qualifications:

Communication skills and phone skills: able to get and give accurate messages to the nurses from parents and students,
Dependable, healthy; able to be exposed to germs (need good immune system),
Neat appearance,
Calm attitude with emergencies,
Hepatitis B series,
CPR certified (may get this after being hired for clinic),
Some previous medical knowledge is helpful.

Desirable Qualifications:

Pleasing personality; able to get along with co-workers,
Respect for supervisor,
Ability to keep medical information and records confidential.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Be required to have the Hepatitis B Immunization series and must show proof of completed series before working at the clinic,
Be required to be CPR certified and to have had a basic first aid or First Responder course, and complete the McDonald Clinic Student Worker Orientation to demonstrate knowledge of the location of supplies and equipment within the facility within the first month of the semester,
Demonstrate hands-on duties such as taking vital signs, sterilizing instruments, waiting on patients, using professional telephone etiquette, checking out rental equipment, effective communication with medical staff, and transporting patients to doctor appointments off campus,
Work closely with the nurse and medical staff to gain experience in various situations from removing stitches to cleaning and bandaging cuts, abrasions, and burns,
Demonstrate knowledge and develop proficiency in assisting the nursing staff in dispensing medications, restocking medication and various supplies throughout the clinic,
Demonstrate proficiency in completing the required daily paperwork required in the clinic, including the updating of student and faculty/staff records, filing, and managing the clinic census,
Work with Admissions to keep track of incoming information for new students and make new charts for them,
Demonstrate knowledge of daily chore assignments and perform duties without requiring assistance. The daily chores include, but are not limited to: cleaning up spills and bodily fluids, sweep, mop, scrub and buff floors using specialized equipment, clean clinic and bathrooms, make beds, sterilize equipment, wash dishes, etc. The McDonald Clinic must remain clean at all times.
