Fire Department

Position Title:

Fire Department Member

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 4

Job Description:

Student workers qualified for, and assigned to, the campus fire department are expected to maintain high levels of readiness and professionalism. They maintain a very high state of readiness to respond as necessary to medical emergencies (initial care) and fires on campus. They are occasionally requested to respond off campus to assist local fire department emergencies.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Keep fire house clean and organized,
Keep fire fighting apparatus clean and in a constant state of readiness,
Plan or assist in the planning of Fire Department training sessions,
Respond to alarms.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

Check fire extinguishers,
Support public fire safety and awareness,
Progressive training for promotion in rank.

Basic Qualifications:

Must be able to carry out the physical requirements and duties of a firefighter,
Work well with others.

Desirable Qualifications:

Leadership skills,
Positive attitude,
Take initiative.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Demonstrate a positive attitude toward completion of all tasks and assignments,
Learn that the firehouse provides support services for people and departments across campus and exhibit a Christ-like character in working with and serving the public,
Learn professional communication skills to successfully interact with others in a respectful and positive manner,
Display positive work habits and self-initiation to complete tasks and duties,
Use excellent communication skills within both the office environment and community initiatives,
Develop effective time management skills in order to complete new and recurring assignments,
Develop the ability to work independently once assignments are learned,
Document information clearly and keep accurate maintenance records relating to equipment and vehicles,
Learn the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding certain matters,
Develop a strong work ethic which reflects the 5-fold mission of the College, and maintain a professional demeanor and character with students, staff, administration, and all off-campus contacts, especially those in the fire service community.
