Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS Office)

Position Title:

EH&S Student Worker

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 3

Job Description:

The EHS office is open from 8 am until 5 pm, Monday through Friday. The position regularly deals with students, faculty, staff, and people from off-campus, both in person and via telephone. The ability to maintain confidentiality at all times, both in and out of the office, is a significant requirement for student workers.
The EH&S office is dedicated to good stewardship of matters relating to campus environmental, health and safety.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times,
Assist in EH&S program management,
Perform assignments key to EH&S compliance and campus objectives,
Research or safety related topics,
Effective, professional communication with students, faculty, staff and off-campus personnel,
File and maintain records and forms,
Maintain computer records with accuracy,
Excellent telephone skills/accurate message taking.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

Some physical tasks as assigned,
Assist with special projects,
General cleaning of office.

Basic Qualifications:

Perform tasks consistently and accurately,
Self-motivated to work on projects with minimal supervision,
Sound computer skills and familiar with Microsoft Office,
Effective communication skills,
Detail-oriented and enjoy office routine and paperwork,
Respectful, dependable and prompt,
Reliable, punctual, and well-groomed appearance,
Must maintain confidentiality.

Desirable Qualifications:

Ability to work well with others,
Good typing skills/telephone etiquette,
Conscientious and hard-working,
Pleasant personality.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Learn that EHS provides support services for people and departments across campus,
Develop a positive customer service attitude,
Learn professional communication skills to successfully interact with others in a respectful and positive manner,
Learn that many of the responsibilities assigned are essential for compliance with various regulatory requirements and providing for the safety of others,
Develop effective time management skills in order to complete new and recurring assignments,
Develop the ability to work independently once assignments are learned,
Develop the ability to document information clearly and maintain accurate records,
Be proficient in working with Microsoft Office programs, especially Word and Excel,
Set a good example as a representative of the EHS Department by working safely and wearing personal protective equipment when necessary,
Provide timely feedback when abnormal situations are encountered while conducting assigned inspections,
Learn the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding certain matters.
