Job Description:
The student workers of the Engineering Department serve as laboratory equipment technicians and trainers, graders, tutors, clerical staff, and receptionists. They play a vital role in the functioning of the department.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
Perform research into equipment and supplies required for engineering courses and labs
Become proficient using a variety of engineering equipment, as well as wood working and metal working equipment
Train students to use equipment and document training
Keep equipment in good repair including regular maintenance
Provide engineering expertise and equipment support to other departments and workstations
Tutor engineering students
Photocopy, scan, and create documents to support instructors and lab director,
Assist instructors and lab director as needed
Be available to respond to students’ needs
Secondary duties and responsibilities:
Routine mail pick-up and deliveries,
Maintain a clean and neat work environment,
Act as a receptionist,
Coordinate meetings with other College departments,
Write, edit, and arrange for printing of program promotional material.
Basic Qualifications:
Successful completion of ENR 1103 – Introduction to Engineering and MAT 175 – Calculus I
Integrity, dependability to complete tasks with minimum supervision
Competent written and spoken communication skills
Ability to get along well with others and function effectively on a team
Desirable Qualifications:
Formally accepted into the Engineering program
Learning Objectives:
The student will:
Learn to work independently and as a team, prioritize, take initiative and responsibility for daily activities such as: grading, copying, mail delivery, tutoring, cleaning, and other duties as assigned,
Develop business process research and presentation techniques,
Improve communication skills through interaction with company representatives and preparing formal written documents for use outside of the department,
Contribute to a positive, collegial environment that enables them to work effectively with fellow students and supervisors,
Gain proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs necessary for upkeep of grade books, and inter-office and external communications,
Learn and practice professional telephone and business etiquette and understand the need for confidentiality when dealing with student records and corporate proprietary information,
Recognize the value of and develop interpersonal and communication skills necessary to keep supervisors apprised of schedule changes and conflicts, assist professors in the lab and classroom and to tutor students seeking help.
