Edwards Mill and Weaving

Position Title:

Millings and Weaving Student Worker

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 3

Job Description:

Edwards Mill is a fully operational grist mill, open year round for visitors.  Students mill products, weave on looms, weave baskets, and sell products.  Work hours are 8 am – 5:30 pm year round.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Mill-grind product and make mixes,
Weave on the looms,
Weave baskets,
Operate the cash register.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

Keep the mill and equipment clean to state standards,
Keep up the inventory,
Talk to groups of tourist.

Basic Qualifications:

Able to lift up to 75 lbs.,
Able to tolerate dusty conditions.

Desirable Qualifications:

Able to effectively communicate with tourist,
A good personality,
Take initiative and be responsible.

Additional Remarks

Our main need is for the student to be able to interact well with tourists.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Understand and apply principles of work ethics,
Complete projects in both loom and basket weaving for sale at the Mill,
Communicate effectively with visitors about how the milling and weaving process works and answer any questions they may have,
Talk to visitors while still working on a project (multi-tasking),
Learn good customer service skills,
Interact with a small, close group of fellow students in the Mill during the work shift,
Work the cash register,
Balance aspects of work and of trade enjoyment to be as productive as possible,
Keep the Mill in good condition and keep the weaving studio in proper order.
