Custodial Department

Position Title:

Cleaning staff

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 2

Job Description:

The Custodial Department  takes care of the janitorial needs of 14 areas on campus. We work 7 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday.  Students are required to work 2-3 weekends per semester and occasionally some evenings.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Clean restrooms, classrooms, halls and entryways,
Strip and wax floors,
Clean carpets, windows, etc.

Basic Qualifications:

Punctuality-ability to work when scheduled (being there on time is a must),
Responsible-ability to complete tasks with little supervision,
Ability to work with others,
Self-motivated,
Attention to detail,
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

Desirable Qualifications:

Positive attitude,
Willing to take the lead.

Additional Remarks

Student workers should expect to routinely work with cleaning solutions.  Normal safety precautions will be employed for their protection.  Individuals with low tolerance to such materials may be better suited for other positions.
Cleaning is relatively easy and can be a very low-stress environment.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Learn how to properly clean and maintain buildings,
Learn the proper use and care of equipment and chemicals,
Learn and exercise proper safety habits,
Learn time management: punctuality (being at work on time and ready to go to work), balancing time between work and the rest of the day, ability to accomplish tasks in a timely manner),
Develop a strong work ethic: should not only learn to work effectively alone, but also be able to collaborate with others, and motivate and support others,
Learn to evaluate the situation, prioritize the tasks at hand and complete tasks in a timely manner,
Learn to become a self-starter, detail oriented: While being on task, don't just go through the motions, but pay attention to every detail,
Develop a good attitude: everything is your job,
Learn to complete every task to the best of their ability,
Learn to effectively communicate with co-workers and supervisors,
Properly fill out building sheets,
Relay information about uncompleted tasks,
Communicate to supervisors about problems in the buildings in a timely fashion,
Communicate with supervisors about illness and other absences in a timely fashion,
Learn to resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
