Athletic Trainer

Position Title:

Student Athletic Trainer

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 4

Job Description:

Athletic training students are an extension of the head athletic trainer. They provide services to the athletes for all practices, games, and rehabilitation sessions. This position can possibly involve working 6-7 days a week depending on the athletic season and practice schedules.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Provide care and treatment of all reported athletic injuries,
Administer first aid as necessary,
Set up training facility for pre practice and post practice treatments,
Be able to use all therapeutic modalities,
Be able to input all daily treatment and injury notes on the computer using the Medicat,
Attend and work selected athletic games and practices involving physically either sitting on the bench or be nearby,
Provide care for morning treatment and rehabilitation sessions (as needed),
Attend mandatory in-service educational sessions in the training facility,
Compile yearly injury statistics,
Scan old ahtletes' files utilizing Medicat or similar software,
Any other duties deemed necessary by the Head Athletic Trainer,
Successfully complete the athletic training proficiency skills test.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

Sweep, mop, and cleaning the athletic training facility,
Transport laundry to drop-off site for pickup,
Handle incoming telephone calls and take messages,
Grade tests and make copies related to Head Athletic Trainer’s classes,
Assist, on occasion, the Physical Education Office.

Basic Qualifications:

Basic knowledge in athletics,
Develop some initiative! Always look for something to do and do not wait to be told what needs to be done,
Physically able to do manual labor when necessary,
Remain calm under pressure, especially when emergencies occur,
Ability to be multi-tasked and pay attention to detail,
Show empathy and support to injured athletes
Responsibility to maintain confidential information on the health status of an athlete.

Desirable Qualifications:

Pleasant personality and good interpersonal skills,
Ability to work with others,
Good work ethic,
Interest in the College of the Ozarks athletic programs
Resourceful.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Be expected to display Christlike servanthood, always being "others" oriented, giving compassionate care for another individual,
Show these characteristics: reliability, punctuality, dependability, loyalty, diligence, and dedication in your efforts,
Learn how to conduct yourself with the highest degree of decorum, to be academically sound, and to represent yourself, the athletic training room and the College with professionalism beyond reproach,
Be expected to follow the policies and procedures in the athletic trainers manual,
Be familiar with goals, objectives, policies and procedures so program operation is uniform, regardless of who is on duty,
Learn and be responsible for the coordination of health care to the student athletes within the intercollegiate athletic program,
Develop various administrative and clinical proficiencies associated with the department,
Learn how to make determination of athletic medical clearance, development and implementation of an emergency action plan, medical record maintenance, compiling injury statistics, instituting medical coverage and staff policy as it relates to practices and games, and budget management for the athletic training room,
Learn and be responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries,
Learn and develop coordination of physician referrals, determination of participation status, and the counseling and education of student athletes,
Follow the vision and goals of College of the Ozarks and the mission of the National Athletic Trainers Association.
