Camp Lookout is a free summer camp for kids in Stone or Taney county held on the College of the Ozarks campus. This camp is geared toward those who would enjoy a summer camp experience at no cost to them or their family. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis.

Who can come to Camp Lookout?

We welcome children (8 to 12 years old) of Stone or Taney county residents who are otherwise unable to afford another camp experience to apply for Camp Lookout.

Where is Camp Lookout?

Camp Lookout is located on a lush, green meadow near the banks of Lake Taneycomo on the College of the Ozarks campus. C of O is located in Point Lookout, Missouri, near Branson.

When is Camp Lookout?

The 2025 dates for Camp Lookout are as follows:

Why is There a Camp Lookout?

College of the Ozarks is a private, Christian college dedicated to helping students as well as the community. C of O, known as "Hard Work U", provides scholarships to financially needy students who work campus jobs to pay for their tuition. We also want to extend our helping hand to younger children by making certain that a lack of finances doesn't keep them from enjoying a summer camp experience.

Placement Policy-

Camp applications will be dated as they are received and vacancies will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to lower income children who live in Stone and Taney county, Missouri. There is not a deadline for applications, however we anticipate that camp will fill up quickly. We do not guarantee placement.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

Please review these details and share pertinent information with your child.

MEDICAL POLICY

If an emergency medical situation with a camper arises, parents or guardians will be contacted immediately. If medical attention is needed between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the camper will be taken to the campus clinic for treatment and then to Cox Hospital Emergency Room if needed. If an emergency medical situation with a camper arises after 4:30 p.m., campers will be taken to Cox Hospital Emergency Room.

All campers will be inspected for lice upon arrival at camp. If our trained personnel see any traces of lice, we can offer the option of treating your child for headlice immediately with parental consent. If the parent or guardian does not consent, the child will not be admitted to camp. The child’s hair must be free of dead or alive nits (lice eggs) and lice in order to be admitted to camp. If your child is not admitted for this reason, we can reconsider your child for another week of camp. They cannot return during the same week.

GENERAL CAMP POLICIES

  • No electronic devices
  • No phone calls to or from parents as this encourages homesickness
  • No jewelry
  • Hats are allowed at camp but not in the college cafeteria
  • Camp Lookout is not responsible for lost or stolen items
  • No tank tops
  • One piece swimwear
  • All hair must be natural colors (college policy)
  • No profane or foul language
  • Campers cannot leave prior to Friday and return to camp
  • No money. If money is sent, it will not be used in any way and will only be another thing your child is trying to keep up with. In order to keep it safe, don`t send it.

CONTACTING CAMP

When camp is in session the camp director is actively involved in supervising activities and is not usually in the office. If you need to contact our staff for any reason; please leave a message at (417)-690-3446. Your call will be returned as soon as possible. The campus switchboard, (417)-334-6411, will have the director’s cell number in the event of an emergency.

PERSONNEL

Camp Lookout is staffed by campus personnel and students. It operates under the umbrella of Christian Ministries with the Dean of Christian Ministries giving leadership to the Camp Administrator and Camp Program Director. The Camp Program Director is on duty at all times.

Leadership responsibilities are given to a male and female student leaders who are selected by the Camp Administrator and Camp Director. Beyond that, approximately 40 college students are interviewed, selected, and trained to serve as counselors. Camp Lookout has a host of additional campus personnel who also assist with the operations of camp. These include but are not limited to: administration; food service, landscaping; laundry; medical clinic; construction and maintenance.

The staff to camper ratio is one camp staff member to six children.

Counselors are also trained in First Aid and CPR. Counselors serving as lifeguards have gone through Red Cross certification. Many counselors serve in consecutive years.

Campers are shuttled to different activities in college-owned vans with counselors passing driving examinations administered by the college security department.

Before camp begins, all preparation is done through the Community Service program office. The Camp Program Director is also responsible for implementing of all Camp Activities while the Community Service Coordinator organizes the logistical side of camp. A student office worker will man the camp office once camp begins.

WHAT TO BRING TO CAMP

  • Clean clothes and undergarments for the entire week
  • Clothes that can get dirty
  • Swimwear/Beach Towel (One Piece Swimwear, College Rule)
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • At least 2 pairs of shoes (Shoes will get wet. At least one pair needs to be closed-toed, comfortable shoes for Silver Dollar City are a must)
  • Toothbrush, comb/brush (we provide toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and conditioner)
  • Bible (we can provide this if needed)
  • We will provide bedding for the week

WHAT NOT TO BRING

  • Money - We do not allow campers to spend money even if they bring it.
  • Electronic games or music
  • Boys – no earrings
  • Girls – studs in ears allowed – no other jewelry
  • No spaghetti-strap tops or short-shorts

CHECK-IN

The Camp Lookout check-in process will begin promptly at 3:30 P.M. the Monday afternoon of his or her camp week. Adults must stay with their camper throughout check-in. Lice checks are mandatory and will take time. If lice or nits (lice eggs) are found we will offer the option to remove them immediately (with parental consent) so that your child can stay at camp. If consent for lice removal is denied you will need to take your camper home and reregister them for another week of camp.

Campers will be assigned to camps and/or cabins according to College of the Ozarks policies. 

* Please keep in mind children cannot leave camp and return (i.e. for baseball games, family reunions).

CHECK-OUT

Pick-up is located at Camp Lookout (follow the signs).

  • On Thursday of your camper's camp week, we suggest you arrive at 4:30-4:50 P.M. and follow the signs to Camp Lookout to start the check-out process, enjoy a meal with your camper, their cabin mates, and their counselors and to watch our closing ceremony. During the closing ceremony cabin awards are given and campers get to share their camp experience with their families.
  • Your child must be checked out before you are permitted to attend the meal and closing program where you will pick your child up. A photo ID is necessary to pick up your camper. If the person picking up the camper is not on the pickup list and/or does not have a photo ID, the camper will not be allowed to go with them.
