Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students

The report for College of the Ozarks is found below.  April 8, 2022

  1. College of the Ozarks (the College) has signed and returned to the Department of Education the Certification and Agreement.  Under Section 2003 of the ARPA (HEERF III) and Section 314 of the CRRSAA the College will provide emergency financial aid grants to students in an amount equivalent to the sum of two amounts: 50 percent of the portion of its allocation that is based on formula factors from CRRSAA section 314(a)(1)(A)-(D) and 100 percent of the portion of its allocation that is based on formula factors from CRRSAA section 314(a)(1)(E)-(F).
  2. The total amount of ARPA funds that the College has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students is $3,445,068.
  3. The total amount of Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 2003 of the ARPA and Section 314 of the CRRSAA as of April 8, 2022 is $3,445,068.
  4. The estimated total number of students at the College eligible to participate in and eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 2003 of the ARPA and Section 314 of the CRRSAA is 1,374.
  5. The total number of students who have received a Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 2003 of the ARPA and Section 314 of the CRRSAA of the CRRSAA is 1,374.
  6. The following methodology was used to select and distribute ARPA grant funds:
    1. Currently enrolled students, as of March 11, 2022, with 6 credit hours or more in the Spring 2022 semester.
    2. Eligible students (step 6.i) were divided into five groups based on EFC with International students in the fifth group.  The institution does not have any DACA students enrolled for Spring 2022.
      1. Exceptional Need - Students with an EFC from 0 to 5846, which is the eligibility range for Federal Pell Grant. (614 students, HEERF III/ARPA grant, $938).
      2. Need – Students with an EFC from 5847 to 11956, which is the need cutoff for Admission purposes. (302 students, HEERF III/ARPA grant, $838).
      3. Moderate Need – Students with an EFC from 11957 to 31456, which is the cost of attendance ceiling for the College. (321 students, HEERF III/ARPA grant, $737)
      4. No Need – Students with an EFC above 31456. (112 students, HEEFR III/ARPA grant, $636)
      5. International – (25 students, HEERF III/ARPA grant, $491).

The funding for the checks is through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) III and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).  The grants provide emergency funding to higher education institutions to assist students during the coronavirus pandemic.  Below, you find eligibility and check information.

Eligibility for Funding:

  • Student must be degree seeking and enrolled as of March 11, 2022 at C of O for spring 2022 in at least 6 credit hours.

Use of Funding:

  • The funding is intended to be used for expenses incurred while attending college (including food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, personal expenses, childcare).
  • You will not have to report how you use the funds.
  • The funds do not affect current or future financial aid.
  • According to IRS information, the funds are not included in the student’s gross income.

Amount of Funding:

  • The CRRSAA/ARPA specifically directs institutions to prioritize the funds to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. 
  • The amount of funding received by each student is based upon the 2021-22 FAFSA results.
  • Range of funding per student is from $491 to $938.

Distribution of Funding:

  • Receipt of this email means that you will receive a check which can be picked up at the Cash Accounts Office during the times specified below.
  • You will need your C of O ID in order to receive your check at the Cash Accounts Office.
  • Grant check distribution will begin Thursday, March 31 at 8:00 a.m. at the Cash Accounts windows in Berger Hall.  
  • The Cash Accounts office is open daily M-F from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and will be open during lunch on 3/31 & 4/1/22.
  • If you choose to apply all of your CRRSAA funds to your student account to pay on a current balance due, let Cash Accounts know at the time you get your check.

      3. Moderate Need – Students with an EFC from 11921 to 31420, which is the cost of attendance ceiling for the College. (292 students, CRRSAA grant, $750).
      4. No Need – Students with an EFC above 31420. (104 students, CRRSAA grant, $560).

  • The amount of funding received by each student is based upon the 2020-21 FAFSA results.
  • Range of funding per student is from $560 to $995.

Section 18004(e) of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act” or the “Act”), pub. l. no. 116-136, 134 stat. 281 (March 27, 2020), directs institutions receiving funds under section 18004 of the act to submit (in a time and manner required by the Secretary) a report to the Secretary describing the use of funds distributed from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (“HEERF”).

  1. College of the Ozarks (the College) has signed and returned to the Department of Education the certification and agreement.  the college has used no less than 50% of the funds received under section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide emergency financial aid grants to students.
  2. The total amount of funds that the college has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s certification and agreement for emergency financial aid grants to students is $1,259,404.
  3. The total amount of emergency financial aid grants distributed to students under section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of July 17, 2020 is $1,259,404.
  4. The estimated total number of students at the College eligible to participate in programs under section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive emergency financial aid grants to students under section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is 1,438.
  5. The total number of students who have received an emergency financial aid grant to students under section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is 1,438.
  6. The method used by the College to determine which students received emergency financial aid grants and how much they received under section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is as follows:
    1. Determine students eligible for CARES Act funds
      1. Full time, degree seeking, enrolled spring 2020 and enrolled as of date CARES Act checks are processed.
      2. Determine those from (i) above who are Title IV eligible
        • Valid FAFSA on file
        • Have positive satisfactory academic progress status
        • No default or grant repayment issues
    2. Utilize total dollars from CARES Act funds to be distributed to students
    3. Determine amount of students’ checks
      1. Even distribution - divide total dollars in 6.ii by eligible students in 6.i.
  7. The following information was provided by the College to students concerning the emergency financial aid grants:
    College of the Ozarks has been fortunate to receive a portion of the CARES Act funding which has been designated for its students.  Please accept the enclosed grant check.
    please note the following regarding the proceeds of the enclosed check:
    1. This check should be used for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus (including, but not limited to, eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and childcare).
    2. You will not have to report how you use the money.
