Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

 1.

What kind of work assignment may I expect as a new freshman or transfer student?

Answer: New C of O students should expect an initial work assignment that is more fundamental in nature, not requiring extensive training or work education. Typically students will work a semester or two in the college cafeteria, Keeter Center, landscaping, agriculture, etc. While working in their initial assignment they can expect to develop important vocational skills that will serve them in future assignments and throughout their professional, post-college careers.

 2.
How and when can I request an assignment to a more preferred work assignment?

Answer: After working a semester or more depending on work performance evaluations, students may request transfer when the Dean of Work Education office advertises a transfer opportunity just prior to beginning a new semester. Priority is given to students with strong work grades, class seniority, and also to students requested by name by a supervisor. As such, it is recommended that students seek an interview with supervisors for whom they would like to work in the future.

 3.
What is Work Probation and how do I stay off of probation?

Answer: Students will be placed on work probation for work grades less than a C-, and for otherwise unsatisfactory performance in their assigned work stations. Students are referred to the Work Probation Committee by the Dean of Work Education and then typically placed on probation for a minimum of one full semester to improve their work performance. Their case once again goes before the committee for removal from probation. Continued unsatisfactory performance during the probationary period will result in removal from the Work Education Program.

 4.
How do I benefit from the Work Education Program?

Answer: Students may defer the cost of a significant portion of their college expenses by working 15 hours a week, and two 40 hours weeks when classes are not in session. This, along with the Summer Work Program for room and board scholarships, allows students the rare opportunity to graduate debt free! They also develop vocational skills that will serve them well throughout their professional lives. Remember that at C of O, work grades are recorded on students’ official transcripts so prospective employers will see documentation of your work performance at Hard Work U.

 5.
What am I able to do with excess work hours?

Answer: Students do not receive pay for time worked and do not receive a reimbursement of any kind if they elect to work additional hours at their assigned campus work assignment. A few extra hours may be worked in addition to normal campus requirements to cover the cost of laundry fees and campus clinic costs.

 6.
What about coordinating with my off-campus job?

Answer: Many students elect to have off-campus jobs and there are many opportunities in the Branson area. Off-campus employment and possible conflicting schedules will never be considered as an acceptable excuse for missing campus work. Such employment will also not be considered when requesting a particular campus work assignment to ensure we’re fair to all students who participate in the Work Education Program at C of O.

 7.  If I contract to work either 6 or 12 weeks of the Summer Work Program, can I change my mind if a great job offer comes up?

Answer: Students may elect to do this but must realize that if they do not honor their contract they may not be approved to participate in future summers. In some cases it might also effect their enrollment for the fall semester. We recommend students carefully consider this important obligation before signing the contract.

 8.

If I contract to work either 6 or 12 weeks of the Summer Work Program, can I request to have a week off during the Summer Work Program?

Answer: Students occasionally request to have a week off for vacation, a wedding, to work as a camp counselor, etc. This is considered for approval on a case by case basis and may be approved if a student can arrange to work a 40 hour week in advance of the week he or she is requesting to have off. Requests typically will not be approved for vacation or convenience reasons.
