College of the Ozarks to serve at Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge Golf Tournament
POINT LOOKOUT, MO. — College of the Ozarks students, staff, and faculty will once again serve as volunteers for the PGA TOUR Champions Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge Golf Tournament, April 19-23, 2017.
College of the Ozarks is an official charitable beneficiary of the tournament. Funds from this year’s tournament went to The Missouri Gold Star Families Memorial on the campus of College of the Ozarks, which will be dedicated on April 19, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. near the College entrance at Patriots Park. The public is invited.
The black granite monument will feature two sides. One side will bear the following inscription: Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Mothers, Fathers, and Relatives who have sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom. The other side tells a story through the four granite panels: Homeland, Family,Patriot, and Sacrifice. At the center of this tribute is the most distinct feature of the Monument, the cut out which represents the loved one who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom. College of the Ozarks seniors Katherine Yung, art education major, and Emma Carter, studio art/graphic design major, helped design the four panels.
Past gifts received from tournament proceeds also helped make the dream of The Missouri Vietnam Veterans Memorial a reality on the campus of College of the Ozarks. The memorial was designed by a student and built by staff and students. It was dedicated in April 2015. Guests are welcome to visit daily, year-round.
Funds also went toward the “Lest We Forget” 9-11 Memorial, which was built by staff and students on the College of the Ozarks campus. The memorial features a steel column from the World Trade Center towers, a reminder of the tragedy and the heroism of those who sacrificed their lives on September 11, 2001.
“The College is pleased to play a role in focusing attention on those honored in Patriots Park,” said Jerry C. Davis, president of College of the Ozarks. “Not only is it consistent with the College’s patriotic goal, it is the right thing to do in honoring the patriots.”
2017 Golf Tournament
This is the fourth consecutive year for C of O to be a part of the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge Golf Tournament. The College contributed more than 180 volunteers last year – representing students, staff, and faculty – to assist with the event.
“We look forward to being able to serve again this year,” said Dr. Chris Larsen, dean of sports, recreation, and events and volunteer general chairman for the tournament. “We are all called to serve, and this tournament allows us to do just that. C of O benefits from this event as the charity, and it is important that we take an interest in making sure that it is the best tournament it can possibly be. We are able to show people from all over the world what C of O and the Ozarks are all about.”
Student volunteers work in a wide variety of roles during the tournament, including serving as caddies, standard bearers, and Golf Channel assistants.
“This is great exposure for our students,” Larsen said. “They are able to meet people they normally wouldn’t get the opportunity to meet and rub elbows with some very influential people.”
