Clinical Experience Information
All candidates at College of the Ozarks complete clinical experiences under the supervision of a qualified cooperating teacher and a qualified faculty member from College of the Ozarks. Student teacher placement is limited to the boundaries as approved on a map on file in the Education Office. There will be no exceptions to the approved distance in placement. Students seeking K-12 certification will usually complete both elementary and secondary assignments. Those seeking certification in more than one teaching field should have field experiences (which may include pre-student teaching experiences) in each teaching field involved. Student teaching experiences are 14 weeks in duration.
The following exception should be noted. A candidate who has been employed in public or accredited nonpublic schools for at least two years as a teacher assistant will be given credit in lieu of conventional student teaching if the following conditions are met:
-
The experience is concurrent with the candidate’s participation in the College of the Ozarks Teacher Education program and in the same content area and grade range for which the student is seeking certification;
-
The experience includes teaching activities comparable to those required for other teacher candidates at College of the Ozarks;
-
The teacher with whom the teacher assistant serves meets the qualifications for a cooperating teacher;
-
The teacher with whom the candidate serves is provided training for observing and evaluating the candidate’s teaching practice by College of the Ozarks; and
-
The candidate is working with permission and under the authority of the principal of the school or a designee.
Any questions regarding student teaching should be directed to the College's Education Office.
